The Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has introduced approx 200 special checkout lanes called "chat checkouts," across its stores in the Netherlands. Designed for customers, particularly elderly, who appreciate a slower-paced checkout that allows time for friendly conversation with cashiers.

Videogames and Complexity

Let me start with a statement: video games are not just entertainment. They are culture. They are training. They are education. They are art.

However, there is a certain tendency in game design over the last five or ten years that tries to make gaming as accessible as possible. Which boils down to increased usability, less interaction needed, more quality of life decisions, all that kind of stuff.

I do feel, though, that there is an important difference between removing unnecessary interaction controls, and removing clutter that disturbs the flow of the game.

Just two days ago, I started playing again #StarCitizen, trying to check out the new 4.0 preview. I am still very new to the whole SC universe, but I don't have to go very deep to be utterly impressed. Why, you might ask, when there are so many people complaining about so much stuff not working?

The majority of people I've worked with want nothing to do with knowing how anything works. They just want their computer to auto-load all their bents like #magic , be able to access anything on the #Network without getting permission and install any #app on their #device they choose.

#Government , #libraries especially, need to untether from #broZone #architecture and do things for themselves again.

I'm not a #statistician and only have #anecdotal #evidence to go by, but I don't see a whole lotta folks doing, or even wanting, to do things themselves. Let alone, pick up the #skills required to do so.

The worst part, the people actually willing and able to help, can't afford to, because it doesn't #pay well, enough.

So, we all have to figure out a way to fix "that" first. But, that would require everyone believing doing #work themselves is better for them and the #Earth in the long run rather than #automating each and every #human #interaction out of #existence
