Henry Frederick Cowper (18 April 1836 – 10 November 1887) was a British #LiberalParty politician. Cowper was the second son of #GeorgeCowper6thEarlCowper, and his wife Anne (later 6th Baroness Lucas of Crudwell), daughter of #ThomasDeGrey2ndEarlDeGrey. #FrancisCowper7thEarlCowper, was his elder brother. He entered the #HouseOfCommons as one of three representatives for #Hertfordshire in 1865, a seat he held until the constituency was abolished in 1885.

The first time this particular ploy was tried - as far as I know - was during the 1945 General Election campaign in the #uk . #winstonchurchill suggested that #Laɓour would introduce a #gestapo if elected. This backfired spectacularly after the #Laɓour leader #clementattlee responded in an exemplary manner. #Laɓour obtained its first ever majority in the #houseofcommons in that election.
