#SanjushDalmia and @JACoates recommend that #UKRI stop funding #APCs as part of its #OpenAccess policy. Instead, it should require grantees to release their grant-funded research as OA #preprints. This type of policy is sometimes called #Plan_U and variations on the theme have been adopted by the #GatesFoundation and #ChanZuckerbergFoundation.

(once the full policy text will become available) what the requirements will be for repository deposit of the peer-reviewed version - in terms of immediacy and license.

The FAQs contain some language around this, but details are not clear (to me) yet.

Open Access s still imperative for the foundation’s funded outputs. Grantees are still required to post preprints OA and CC BY or deposit their accepted manuscripts in PubMed Central (PMC).

* The foundation’s 2025 policy refresh will continue to include the Plan S guidance that authors (or their organizations) must retain sufficient copyright to comply with their Open Access requirements. * We will ensure funding contracts or agreements outline that authors must retain copyright as well as the rights that are necessary to make a version immediately available under an open license.

Big move by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to stop paying Article Processing Charges (APCs) to make journal articles open access (OA) at the start of next year. Instead, they will mandate preprints & encourage preprint reviews. APCs made the transition to OA possible, but the tide is turning against this business model.
