‪Hey Canary Media, if an 8MW liquid-hydrogen-fueled Plug Power fuel cell can perform bumpless transfer from grid to islanded microgrid mode↙️ in Calistoga, CA, it would be technical malpractice to not have spent a few extra dollars & program black-start capability into the system!↘️ All the necessary hardware is already there!

Please verify that your statement is true.

💡Growth fueled by zero-emission mobility, hydrogen infrastructure development, and rising EV adoption.

@enobacon Or using cells that ain't gonna violently explode when short-circuit'd internally?

And again: #FuelCell technology could replace a lot of applications currently occupied by #Diesel generators like #EmergencyPower and #HeavyDutyMachinery powerplants...

Replied in thread

@GreenFire The problem is that instead of BEVs full of conflict minerals we could reduce that and their excessive cost & weight with #FuelCell technology, which would also allow easier transition of infrastructure as gas stations can easier convert a pump and a reservoir to #Methanol than one can install half a dozen superfast chargers...

  • Plus it'll combat #RangeAnxiety and allow the conversion of #HeavyDuty equipment like #Trucks & Excavators as well as Ambulances and even the emergency Generators in Hospitals...

@GreenFire we could even use thermal powerplant tech fir solarthermal plants, have them heat up heat storage and use peak power to synthesize methanol as a #FuelCell energy source we can pump like oil and refuel like gasoline, solving the whole storage issue entirely.

@LunaDragofelis @CStamp or even better:

#Methanol which allows for a higher energy density without necessitating high-pressure tanks and systems (which in case of a fire can detonate like a pipe bomb)....

  • Also since Methanol is common in nature, it's easily metabolized by microorganisms (so is less of an issue than traditional gasoline) and it burns clean at cold temperatures.

And thus #FuelCell technology with #Methanol allows for the swiftness of #refueling with the cleanness of #electric propulsion whilst saving a lot in deadweight compromised mostly of conflict minerals like #cobalt and #Lithium.

@Salty @leanlearnlead charging being slower because shitty #batteries are used instead if #Methanol #FuelCell|s is one thing, but why can't I just chug in a banknote into a machine or pay at a teller at a "Charging Station" and get like an SMS, eMail or any other notification when it's done?

  • Cash aside, there's no reason in the age of #NFC-enabled parking meters to not have the same convenience as those, as a #ChargingStation doesn't have the excuse of "no grid electricity" to be kneecapped.

Worse even if someone's vehicle doesn't have a #CC2 charging port (basically all scooters ≤15kW / 90km/h)...

It could be useful in some places sometimes. City deliveries for example.

Hydrogen is inefficient, yes, but a battery is heavy, requires rare earth metals and must be charged often.

Even if this bicycle idea fails, the fact that such a small fuel cell exist is good.

Maybe it could be backup power for mobile phone masts, hospitals, or something along those lines?

@KarlHeinzHasliP @denki Personally, I think that standardized #batteries that get swapped would've been the solution to the charging speed problem.

#BEV|s are a problem and the #EnergyDensity and #Charging problems are hard walls that can only be circumvented (i.e. swapping fluids at a #RedoxFlow-#Battery) or ignored (i.e. #Methanol #FuelCell)...

Solving the #EnergyProblem isn't a technological issue, but a political one (see #DESERTEC)...
