#Trump ORDERED [yeah, he’s not allowed to do that] US AG #PamBondi to investigate allegations “regarding the unlawful use of online fundraising platforms to make ‘straw’ or ‘dummy’ contributions or foreign contributions to political candidates & committees.” #GOP-led congressional committees have put forth similar #ConspiracyTheories about #ActBlue’s practices over the past few years, but the claims have never been substantiated with evidence.

The real #WeaponizationOfGovernment:

#Trump & #GOP ramp up investigations of #Democrats

Trump directed his AG to investigate fundraising platforms such as #ActBlue, the central fundraising apparatus of the #DemocraticParty — escalating his effort to use his power to target political opponents & —in this case — the core machinery of his opposition.

The Washington Post · Trump and GOP ramp up investigations on Democrats’ top fundraising platformBy Maeve Reston

Maybe the saddest thing about Mastodon is that it seems like a place where internet arguments could be reasoned discussions that don't devolve into insults, but it's not. The higher character limit, lack of algorithms, etc have done nothing to make people less toxic.

I was just talking to a Jacobin who was arguing in favour of treating all Republican voters like they're just as evil as the politicians they elected, because, well, they elected them, right? She wanted to adopt a stance of extreme intolerance towards anyone even remotely responsible for the evil we're seeing.

I asked what that thought process implies for her, a person remotely responsible for an enormous amount of animal suffering and environmental destruction, through her purchasing of animal products at the grocery store (an assumption, to be sure, but one that she didn't correct). If it's okay for her to tell Republican voters to go die in a ditch, is it okay for me to do the same to non-vegans? I had asked this earlier in the thread, and didn't repeat the question quite as explicitly this time, but I said "You "vote" (with your wallet) for..." And specifically mentioned how "buying beef always kills cows". Nothing in my reply could possibly be construed as having anything to do with any literal election.

This was her response: "Jesus FUCKING CHRIST...WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? You're whining about how I'm choosing to gas animals and grind them up BECAUSE I VOTED TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE? YOU HAVE THE NERVE to say Harris lost and it's my fault BECAUSE I VOTED FOR HER? You are off the rails, sweetheart." [capitalization in original]

This same thread had someone tell me I'm basically Hitler because I abbreviated a paragraph describing predictable behaviour to "like NPCs" (a paragraph I then typed out in full, to make sure there could be no more unintentional misunderstandings). They then made several replies to other people talking about how the left is doomed because people like me want to condemn people in the strongest terms over nothing.

So yeah. Some people are just as impossible to reason with here as they are on Twitter. Do not engage. #Mastodon #Internet #SocialMedia #Trolls #Trolling #Extremism

Day 26 cont 🥷🥷🥷📸🤳🤳

#Kooyong MP #MoniqueRyan had just remarked that the national broadcaster’s annual budget was “about as much as we spend on keeping 100 refugees on #Nauru and #PNG” when a man’s voice suddenly bellowed from the back of the room.

“We’re just here to ask about immigration and crime,” he said.

A meeting of Kooyong candidates led to a heated confrontation between agitators and other attendees.
In a room at the #KewLibrary filled with #CivicMinded locals waiting to hear from the Kooyong candidates about the state of the media, the arrival of the three unexpected men disrupted the calm.

Leading them was a bald man with a #goatee, wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the logo of the “#AustralianWorkersAlliance” – a self-described nationalist organisation whose mission includes the “preservation of #WesternCulture and identity”. One of the other men wore a leather jacket and filmed the room with his #phone – a dead giveaway that the goal was to capture a viral “gotcha” moment. The third man, dressed in a grey hoodie and sneakers, loitered nearby with his hands in his pockets as back-up.”

ABC News · Stabbing of bishop at Wakeley church 'could have been prevented', former ASIO agent saysBy Sean Rubinsztein-Dunlop

This is a fantastic interview about successful messaging in the face of #Fascism and #authoritarianism. Pedro Telles co-founded Quid, a communications organization in Brazil focused on fighting right-wing extremism, which was instrumental in defeating Bolsonaro’s reelection bid in 2023.

There are so many nuggest of wisdom in the interview, such as the “three levels of influence”—local groups, followed channels, friend-followed channels—that shape a person’s mindset, and how opposition communication needs to use that to their advantage.

The success of Quid seems based on deep study and extensive (and expensive, I think) action that successfully infiltrated the media landscape to neutralize right-wing messaging. It’s their nontraditional, cool-headed, strategic methodology that makes them as formidable as Fox News.

It’s quite a read. I don’t know if anyone has risen to the challenge quite to this extent in the US.

#Trump has particularly threatened #universities over campus #protests against #US ally #Israel's devastating military assault on #Gaza after a deadly Oct 2023 attack by Palestinian #Hamas militants.

Trump casts the protesters as #ForeignPolicy threats who are antisemitic & sympathetic to Hamas. Protesters, including some #Jewish groups, say Trump wrongly conflates their advocacy for #Palestinian rights & criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza w/support for #extremism & #antisemitism.
