Ons digitale leven draait nu vooral op #Amerikaanse en #Chinese technologie. Hoe komt de #Europese #Unie daar los van? Topeconoom Francesca #Bria (°1977) stelt voor om de #EuroStack te maken. Dit is een plan om zelf controle te houden over digitale systemen. Volgens Bria is het belangrijk dat steden, landen en continenten niet afhankelijk zijn van buitenlandse techbedrijven. De EuroStack heeft zeven lagen. Samen helpen ze Europa om #digitaal onafhankelijk te worden.

EU institutions are probably the biggest (if not only) ongoing believers of the #semanticweb and related #linkeddata technologies such as OWL ontologies etc.

The logic behind the use of such tools is as impeccable as ever (quote: enables systems and services to exchange and interpret data meaningfully) but history (rather, bigtech centralization) decided otherwise.

Whether the push for a #eurostack will bring those ideas back into the mainstream remains to be seen.

When I speak of sovereignty, I mean defending our borders — digital and otherwise. I mean protecting our data, shielding our children from exploitative platforms, and ensuring that tech is developed with the citizen in mind — not the consumer. Europe doesn’t have a moral high ground — it has a different philosophy. In Europe, people are citizens. Not products.

It is disheartening to see how much public money from EU member states flows into American tech giants — funds that could instead fuel the growth of European alternatives. Europe is home to some of the world’s best universities, producing top-tier talent. Yet, our brightest minds too often take their expertise across the Atlantic, only to build algorithms for companies that are harming users, undermining democracies, and consolidating power in unprecedented ways.
