Fossil fuels, Marine heatwaves and Runoff: The bloom pulsates

"Algal blooms are complex, but the prevailing theory is that the 2022-23 floods washed nutrients down the Murray-Darling Basin system and out to sea. A marine heatwave and an “upwelling” of nutrients from the bottom of the ocean combined to create the perfect conditions for Karenia mikimotoi to flourish."

Gorge #FloodAdaptation for Sea Level Rise #CommunityWorkshop By City of Victoria
Have your say on the future of the #GorgeWaterway and #PortageInlet.

Thursday, September 25 · 2 - 4pm PDT.
Doors at 1:45pm.
Esquimalt Gorge Park & Pavilion
1070 Tillicum Rd.

Join us at this workshop to learn more about sea level rise in the Gorge and Portage Inlet and to share your knowledge, experience and values to help guide #SeaLevelRise planning for the area. A presentation will be followed by a #facilitated discussion that will help inform adaptation options to address sea level rise.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

Introduction to the Gorge Coastal #Flood Adaptation Strategy.
Sea level rise projections, including areas, #ecosystems and #infrastructure at risk in the Gorge
Possible #coastal adaptation approaches
Examples of coastal resilience initiatives along the Gorge
Activities to explore values informing future coastal planning

The feedback we receive will inform the Gorge Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy, a collaboration between by the Township of #Esquimalt , the District of #Saanich , the City of #VictoriaBC and the Town of #ViewRoyal with support from the #CapitalRegionalDistrict.

Refreshments will be provided.

Registration is required. If we reach capacity for the event, we will take a waitlist and may add an additional event.

Is a River Alive is well researched, very readable, and informed by an #Indigenous #worldview as expressed by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Facts are balanced with loving narratives of #waterprotectors in 3 case studies. #Water keepers understand #ecosystems kindoms and their place within them. Macfarlane is hopeful while challenging readers to #decolonize. The ancient Epic of Gilgamesh, story of greed has a place in this book as it did in Elif Shafak's There are Rivers in the Sky.

*I've spoken up about this issue multiple times here, since joining in 2022. My family members were & still are affected by the massive damages caused by #USMilitary invasion. The US government used us as guinea pigs to test out their newer #WeaponsOfMassDestruction.
This doesn't even touch upon the countless USA war munitions still left all across Vietnam. *

The term #ecocide had been coined in the late 1960s to describe the U.S. military’s use of #herbicides like #AgentOrange and incendiary weapons like #napalm to battle #guerrilla forces that used jungles and marshes for cover.

Fifty years later, #Vietnam ’s degraded #ecosystems and #dioxin #contaminated soils and waters still reflect the long-term #ecological consequences of the #war. Efforts to restore these damaged landscapes and even to assess the long-term harm have been limited.

With waters at 32C, Mediterranean tropicalization shifts into high gear

"We were at a depth of 30 meters (100 feet) this morning and the water was 29C," said Draman, a diving instructor in an area which is experiencing firsthand the rapid #tropicalization of the #Mediterranean Sea.

Encouraged by increasingly warm waters, hundreds of species native to the #RedSea have moved through the #SuezCanal and into the eastern Mediterranean, disrupting #ecosystems, scientists say.

The threat is facing the entire Mediterranean, one of the fastest-warming seas, which this year saw its hottest June and July on #record, figures from the Mercator Ocean International research center show.

Draman, who remembers when the water temperatures were 25C in August in the early 2000s, said he had seen dozens of Red Sea species colonizing the clear waters of #Antalya where surface temperatures reached nearly 32C this week.

@LordWoolamaloo Had bookmarked this. MacFarlane's Is a River Alive is well researched, very readable, and informed by an #Indigenous #worldview as expressed by Robin Wall Kimmerer. His loving portrayals of the #waterprotectors / #water keepers reflect Kimmmer's principles of stewardship of the natural world as our responsibility as members of our #ecosystems 'kindoms'. The #river keepers have as Kimmerer might say, a decolonized mindset.

Farmworkers Heal Climate-Scarred Land With #NativeSeeds

At #California’s #HedgerowFarms, specialists produce seeds to #revegetate burned areas, reestablish #wetlands, and transform drought-prone #farmland

By Caleb Hampton

July 7, 2025

"Quiroz and Gómez are seed-cleaning specialists and field workers at Hedgerow Farms, a native seed farm near the #CentralValley town of #WintersCA. Hedgerow’s collectors gather seeds from native plants in the wild, and field workers grow them out at the 300-acre farm to produce more seeds. This spring, neat rows of #mugwort, #PurpleNeedlegrass, and #CaliforniaPoppies sprouted in the midst of neighboring almond orchards, tomatoes, and alfalfa.

"Government agencies, tribes, and other land managers use the seeds to revegetate #FireRavagedAreas, transform #AbandonedFarmland, reestablish wetlands, and repair other damaged or altered lands, creating environments that support local #ecosystems and #biodiversity.

" 'We’re doing something for the planet,' Quiroz said in Spanish.

"Recreational areas have benefited too: Hedgerow Farms’ #SilverbushLupine grows in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and its #NativeGrasses can be found in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area outside Sacramento. The farm also supplies native seeds to seed packet retailers, helping sow #DroughtResistant plants and establish #pollinator habitat in #urban environments.

"Some projects, such as the ongoing restoration of the #KlamathRiverBasin in Oregon and California, involve billions of seeds — from various suppliers, including Hedgerow — spread across thousands of acres. 'Native vegetation is the foundation of a healthy #ecosystem,' the #YurokTribe said in a social media post showing #wildflowers blooming this spring in the scar of a former reservoir.

"After four dams were removed from the #KlamathRiver, the tribe began #revegetating the riverbanks last year, planting species such as #milkweed — a key food source for #MonarchButterflies — that once flourished in the watershed."
