The largest competitor to commercial #GIS is open source software and tools – #FOSSGIS infrastructure is now at a level where municipalities and companies shift away from commercial solutions. Would anyone happen to have any material (case studies etc.) on this topic to prove this point?

I use StoryMaps, which is closing, and I'm going to move to ArcGIS StoryMaps ($). The weird thing in the notification was:
"StoryMaps.com data is stored in the United States. If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, your data will continue to be stored in the United States."
In the fine print, if I join ArcGIS, it says:
"...a customer can specify to store their data and services in the EU region..."

WTF is going on?

The World Water Map is designed to draw public attention to a growing problem: In many parts of the world, demand for fresh water now exceeds the supply from rivers and shallow aquifers that are regularly renewed by rain. #NatGeo #Esri

@robintw The crucial difference between #QGIS and #ESRI tools is their relationship to the underlying data structures.

QGIS was written as a front-end to #PostGIS. As such, it respects all the data management e.g. IDs, relationships and constraints from the db. This applies to Oracle, GeoPackage, too. All other DB tooling e.g. SQL scripting works as normal.

@watmildon @skyfaller That MapWithAI tool is interesting. But I'm a skeptical commie that doesn't like BigTech :P Why are Facebook (and even worse, ESRI) dedicating resources to this effort? Do they offer up their ML models, hi-res sat photogrammetry, other data, and code for local use? Or are those hidden away in a networked back-end somewhere?

Basically, I'm not interested in doing free labor for BigTech, which is honestly what the tool feels like. They get to refine their ML models with labeling from highly trained and accurate analysts that would otherwise cost a pretty penny (at scale, anyway). And OSM gets? One-time infusions of data, with (potentially) no way to maintain and improve upon the process without their continued blessing. Not the best trade in my view. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is it time to talk about #NewYearsResolution2025 yet?

I've had 4 good years posting on the #Esri Community boards, answering the same 5 questions about Arcade several hundred times.

Starting 2025, I think I'm done posting there.

I always knew that I didn't "own" the stuff I posted there, but the weight of that didn't hit home until this past August:
