Want to install and uninstall any software, including operating systems, browsers and app stores?
Device manufacturers, vendors, and platforms should not dictate how we use our devices.
We need #DeviceNeutrality
May Newsletter!!
In April, our work on #DeviceNeutrality continued with news and meetings on DMA; we had a #PMPC meeting in Germany and talked about the German coalition agreement in one of our Podcast episodes; we also held our annual Legal & Licensing Workshop; and we published another article in our Legal Corner:
Your device, your choice!
When you get a device, you should be able to decide what apps you install or which OS you use.
#DeviceNeutrality helps to break up digital monopolies and restore competition by giving back to end-users control of their devices. #FreeSoftware is also key for it.
The #DMA is a step forward for #DeviceNeutrality, but Apple (one of the so-called gatekeeper) is taking it to court to protect its App Store monopoly.
The Free Software Foundation Europe is stepping in to defend our freedom and digital rights in this crucial EU antitrust case!
We are the only non-profit involved! Support us to continue our work! https://fsfe.org/donate

Say no to lock down devices, that are limiting our freedom to install apps, switch OSes, or use services outside the big tech walled gardens.
Say yes to Device Neutrality, that ensures we control our own hardware!
We are asking for the right to install any software on our devices
Your device, your choice!
This year I am unfortunately sick and could not properly join the nice festivities of #iLoveFS, but I do want to thank @eighthave from @fdroidorg, @marcprux from #AppFair, Benjamin from @Tor, Marc from #GNUTaler, the nice people from #iSH and many others for their volunteer time and expertise in helping us to understand the technical and legal aspects of #interoperability, #AppStore and #Safari. With their support we are pushing #DeviceNeutrality in environments dominated by #Apple.
Why the @fsfe is working on #deviceneutrality and is active in litigation against #apple in front of the European Court of Justice. That what @llas talks about at #fosdem .
Apple has more balloons than the @fsfe has balloons. Please support our work https://fsfe.org/support
The FSFE , with 40+ civil society organisations, signed an open letter coordinated by @edri urging the @EUCommission to not be intimidated by threats against a vigorous Digital Markets Act enforcement.
For instance, #Apple has taken an aggressive position against the #DMA, litigating against the EC in a case we are intervening.
DMA is crucial to stop and prevent monopolistic practices. It represents an important step for #DeviceNeutrality and #SoftwareFreedom

#RouterFreedom is the longest policy/legal project I have been working so far. While the @fsfe started in Germany way back in 2013, I joined later the party in Feb. 2019 to cover the efforts at EU level after the 2018 reform of EU telecommunications law.
Having Router Freedom confirmed after almost 6 years in Germany is a great achievement, also in a personal level. I am very grateful to a LOT of people helping us with technical, legal, policy and community management advises. The effort paid off!
In special a big shout out to @mxmehl, @lexelas and @kirschner who have been great fellows in this path.
Now we look to a broader picture. #DeviceNeutrality, #DMA, #satellite networks are posing new challenges for #NetNeutrality and the right of end-users to choose their own equipment for internet connection.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (#CMA) has launched today a new investigation into #Apple and #Google under the Digital Markets Competition Code (#DMCC) to determine their strategic market status in mobile ecosystems, including operating systems, app stores, and mobile browsers.
We welcome this as a step towards fairer markets where #DeviceNeutrality is the standard, and #FreeSoftware its enabler.
