A list of cancelled and retained USAID contracts presented to the US Congress indicates that at least nine African nations may have lost all projects…Analysis of the list by two research fellows at the Centre for Global Development shows the cuts are deepest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. Across 44 African countries, they amount to nearly $4 billion in lost funding. —From “The Continent” #Africa #USAID #ForeignPolicy #DRC #Ethiopia #Uganda #Kenya #Tanzania #SouthAfrica #RepublicansDidThis #TheContinent

@DoctorsWithoutBorders has witnessed a renewed spike in atrocities in eastern DRC’s Ituri province, where its medical teams are providing care for civilians with horrific injuries. In a new report released today, “Risking Their Lives to Survive,” MSF underscores the extreme needs of many communities endangered by recent attacks, increased displacement, and reduced #humanitarian #aid.

‘Rapid response’? The Ituri and Kivu provinces have been subjected to armed conflicts since before the 1960 ( even pre-western colonialisation as slave trade history shows). Killings and rape has been the norm, on and off, for various reasons which revolve around race, politics, mining and foreign interests. Too many ‘fingers in the pie’ to resolve without ‘cutting hands off’ (pun intended re: colonial history - I’m ashamed to day). Even though a large majority of the guilty parties are not Africans their hands should be cut off as well. And this leaves very few in our world, if any, with the power to put things right in the heart of Africa. I weep for the continent and its innocent peoples.

🇨🇩 While a rapid response is needed to curb the insurgency, history has proven that US intervention, such as in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan, brings more suffering to civilian populations rather than alleviating it. Additionally, the US is complicit in the DRC’s destruction

How not to report on Eastern Congo

Western media coverage of the DRC conflict is riddled with inaccuracies, oversimplifications, and racial bias—reinforcing dangerous narratives rather than informing the world.

"We can have different perspectives on the conflict and opposing theories about the geopolitics of the region, but these should be grounded on verified facts rather than sloppy coverage."

As part of this scramble, in February last year, the EU signed a $900 million deal with Rwanda “to nurture sustainable and resilient value chains for critical raw materials.” Ironically, Rwanda exports more minerals than it does from its own mines. The DRC, the United Nations, and international human rights groups say the bulk of minerals exported by Rwanda are plundered from eastern DRC. Coincidentally, in the immediate aftermath of this EU-Rwanda minerals supply deal, fighting resumed in eastern DRC, peaking in February this year when the Rwanda-backed M-23 rebel group seized control of vast swathes of the area in this mineral-rich part of the country. Rights groups say over 8,500 people have been killed in this attack. Even the EU Parliament has voted for the suspension of the minerals deal until Rwanda stops supporting the M-23 rebels, but the EU is not keen to do so, putting its own interests ahead of the rights of the citizens of the DRC, and human rights in general.
....DRC remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

I feel like I should write something about #Grimonprez' formally masterful documentary, which it seems to me continues to push a version of #Lumumba's murder that was established by Ludo de Witte and popularised by Raoul Peck; namely, one that underplays Lumumbas own tactical and political errors, presents Kasavubu and Tshombe as mostly pawns and Mobutu as the evil presence in the shadows and in general underplays Africans' agency. In contrast, Hammarskjöld seems more a traitor to the cause than a tragic figure in which the structural problems of the UN itself played out.

I've taught about the history of the #DRC several times. Each time, we would watch Raoul Peck's "Lumumba" at the end and take apart its heroic narrative. This doesn't mean downplaying the imperialist violence at the center of the story; it does mean taking African politicians' decisions seriously.

Trump to DR Congo’s rescue? What we know about a proposed US-Congolese mining deal

"Congolese authorities are hoping to conclude an agreement with the Trump administration on the country's mining resources in a bid to secure US support in their fight against the M23 rebels and Rwandan forces leading an offensive in eastern DR Congo. While preliminary discussions have begun, details of the settlement remain very vague."
