Community Notes Can’t Save Social Media From Itself

bloomberg.com/opinion/features

#DataJournalism on the X/Twitter #CommunityNotes data suggests
- CN are getting faster, but are still slow (median is +14 hours after original post)
- A smaller % of notes are being published (personally, not sure that is bad if overall submission number is up)
- the content for notes overwhelming comes from traditional media, wikipedia and fact-checkers

Meta: Testing Begins for Community Notes on Facebook, Instagram and Threads
about.fb.com/news/2025/03/test

- in US initially, across several languages
- no dampening of posts which attract Notes
- they're going to start with the original CN algorithm from X/twitter
- repeats claim that professional fact checkers are biased

Meta · Testing Begins for Community Notes on Facebook, Instagram and Threads | MetaOn March 18th, we will begin testing our new crowd-sourced Community Notes approach.

#Musk and #TFG and the #MAGA masses are so accustomed to lying and getting away with it, they just spew meaningless garbage without a care in the world? Something now immediately contradicts something said a week or so ago? Who cares! It’s not like anyone gives a damn, anyway, and if they do there’s nothing they can do to stop it, so again… who cares!

Take #Xitter’s #CommunityNotes as an example. They were great because Musk didn’t need to pay people to keep toxic shit off the Official Social Network of Shitposting® because the “community” would handle that. But now that those same notes are being “gamed” by filthy libs, “he” is going to have to “fix” them, so I guess not the bestest anymore?

These 20G 90º turns at speed are quite jarring. #socialmedia #tech #capitalism #fascism arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20

#ElonMusk to “fix” Community Notes after they contradict #Trump

#CommunityNotes are supposed to be added to posts to limit #misinformation spread after a broad consensus is reached among X users with diverse viewpoints on what corrections are needed. But #Musk now claims a "fix" is needed to prevent supposedly outside influencers from allegedly gaming the system.

New study: "We use crowd-sourced assessments from X’s #CommunityNotes program to examine whether there are partisan differences in the sharing of misleading information. Unlike previous studies, misleadingness here is determined by agreement across a diverse community of platform users, rather than by fact-checkers. We find that 67% more posts by #Republicans are flagged as misleading compared to posts by #Democrats."

unpopular opinion but #Facebook and #Instagram switching to "community notes" style moderation is probably a good thing even if it's being done for the wrong reasons (those reasons being to save money on personnel by not paying fact checkers, presented in a way to make it look like a giant suckup to #Trump).

the crazies don't trust Facebook's official fact checkers. in fact a lot of the crazies are *more* likely to believe something if the official fact checkers say it's false ("must be over the target" is their usual phraseology). community notes, despite its many flaws, has far more power to convince the crazies, which is the most important goal of a fact checking institution in our modern era.
