A lot of people don't really know what it means for a lawyer to take a case "pro bono". Pro bono, or free, legal representation happens in one of two circumstances: (1) the lawyer is employed by an organization like a nonprofit or a government agency, which has funds to pay the lawyer's salary even though their clients don't have to pay any legal costs, or (2) a private, for-profit attorney volunteers a small fraction of their time to take unpaid cases "on the side" of their paid ones - often these "on the side" cases are in a totally different area of law than the one they usually practice, and they need another attorney experienced in the appropriate area of law (often one employed by one of those public service orgs, through which the private attorney is volunteering) to mentor them and walk them through the case.

When government funding for pro bono legal aid is cut, both of those sources of legal representation for people who can't afford to pay steep legal fees go away. Lawyers can't work full time for no wages. Their salary has to come from somewhere, and if they do pro bono cases on the side as part-time volunteers, they generally need a funded, robust pro bono volunteering program through which to do that.

A ton of these kids who are going to get deported because they don't have lawyers qualify for legal US immigration programs. They meet the criteria to qualify to stay here. If they didn't, having a lawyer wouldn't do them any good anyway. But immigration cases are super complicated, and no one who isn't a lawyer has much chance of doing the process correctly.

After winning the #TEDPrize on March 2, 2011, the French #artist JR launched the #InsideOutProject, in his first #TEDTalk. Using his own #artistic practice as inspiration, this participatory platform helps individuals and communities to make a statement by displaying large-scale black and white #portraits in public spaces. Through their “Actions,” communities around the world have sparked #collaborations and conversations.

Over the past decade, more than 500,000 people spanning across 152 countries and territories have participated in the Inside Out Project. Thanks to participants' donations, the project has reached all the continents, with over 2,500 actions created. Actions have revolved around a range of topics: #diversity, #community, #feminism, #racism, #ClimateChange, #education, #ChildrensRights, and #art are just a few of them. SpringerLinkEpistemic Disadvantage - PhilosophiaRecent philosophical literature on epistemic harms has paid little attention to the difference between deliberate and non-deliberate harms. In this paper, I analyze the “Curare Case,” a case from the 1940’s in which patient testimony was disregarded by physicians. This case has been described as an instance of epistemic injustice. I problematize this description, arguing instead that the case shows an instance of “epistemic disadvantage.” I propose epistemic disadvantage indicates when harms result from warranted asymmetric relations that justifiably exclude individuals from hermeneutical participation. Epistemic disadvantage categorizes harms that result from justifiable exclusions, are non-deliberate, and result from poor epistemic environments. This analysis brings out a meaningful difference between accidental and deliberate harms in communicative exchanges.
