Hey people of @Mastodon EU. Especially people of infosec.exchange hosted by @jerry. The EU is again doing some horrendously stupid thing.
TLDR; The EU (still) wants to scan
your private messages and photos, but we can still fight it. So please please share this important message and educate people.
Here is a quick overview what the EU is planning:
Use client side scanning (i.e. a kernel level programm that scans messages and photos with AI) to bypass everyones privacy. They can't break E2EE and thus they try to spy on you before it is encrypted.
You might ask why would they do this and the answer is simple. They think they can protect the children with this. The whole thing is under the theme of "we need to protect children" to get people that send CSAM or similar to justice. This is GOOD, but the idea of breaking everyones privacy is stupid. Here is why:
1. Criminals be criminals. Criminals don't play by the rules. It already is shown that it's easy to bypass these scanners which mostly criminals will do.
2. They build infrastructure to control. For now it's this but if the infrastructure is there who will stop them from doing more 'scanning'?
3. They are breaking fundamental rights of every human. They ignore the presumption of innocence by doing mass survailance.
4. The error rate is laughable. Current numbers say it's 90% accurate. That means law enforment will be flooded with false positives and thus can not focus on real things anymore.
5. It's plain ineffective. Many child protection groups and experts speak against this as it fails to prevent abuse.
