Today in Labor History March 23, 1988: Angolan and Cuban forces defeated South Africa in the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. The battle started in August, 1987. In addition to Cubans, volunteers from the USSR, Vietnam, the African National Congress and SWAPO joined the People’s Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA) in the Angolan Civil War. It was the largest battle in Africa since World War II. Several thousand died on both sides, including citizens of South Africa, Cuba, and the USSR

Years ago when I taught high school in #Coquitlam, the school created a grade 8 elective rotation course called #enrichment. Basically taking the stuff that gifted students would get, give it to everybody, for 6 weeks as they rotated through all the other electives in the school.

That year I was reading a lot about the #landmines in #Angola. And I suggested to the students that hey, what if someone from Angola invented a way to spot metal and ceramic landmines from high in the air.

The conflict, rooted in regional tensions and control over mineral resources, has escalated with M23 capturing key cities in North and South Kivu. While Kinshasa initially refused direct talks with M23, accusing Rwanda of backing the rebels, it now appears open to Angola's mediation.  The crisis will also be addressed at the upcoming regional and international forums, including a Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit, the EU-South Africa summit, and a UN Security Council meeting.
