There is nothing quite like a pickled beetroot and salad cream sandwich.
Does it count as a guilty pleasure?
Nah! I feel no guilt at all.
Loved it as a kid.
Even better as the beetroot was grown in the #allotment last year.

In other exciting news from the weekend, we picked up the keys to our allotment after 7 years on the waiting list - we fell very lucky with the condition of the plot. Now I need to build a whole new section in my digital garden about our actual garden! #allotment

My pepper seeds just do not want to germinate this year. Not even the new ones.

What is this weed? Dug out of a Norfolk UK allotment bed.
We saw these little fuzzy leaves poking out of the ground in the middle of our asparagus bed. I dug around them trying to get as much out as possible and my little trowel hit something that went crunch... I dug out this large root/rhizome/tuber... clearly not all of it either. It's huge!
I've no idea what this is.
Edit: as identified by @laurenheywood this is a bryony of some sort ... we actually had this weed growing amongst the asparagus last year and thought it might be some sort of cucumber, but then it had red berries. Turns out it's related to cucumber! I assumed it was some annual, not something with a huge tuber! No we know.
Another beaut arvo/evening down the #allotment
With the stress and anxiety of the job hunt over I am so much better at just getting things done. I don't fret endlessly when doing things that don't contribute to gaining employment. I can relax a little.
BST and the weather also has a huge role to play no doubt. Beautiful day, yesterday's sunshine but without the chill wind.
We finished sorting out the raspberry tunnel, fully woodchiped, coniferous on the raspberries, and willow on the path with mypex under it (figured we may as well use some of what came with the plot, probably the only place we'll use it.)
Bit of a general rejig and tidy, moving the slidy-puzzle pieces to access the next tasks... IBCs as scaffold to access shed roof.
Planted the broad beans and field beans.
A good day.
I spend a good chunk of time outdoors, but this week is the first time the sun has been strong enough that I now have some tan lines.
Kat is Radish Top Girl.
Yesterday's weed haul at the garden. I try to keep bouts of weeding to under 5 mins so that it doesn't become loathsome chore that I will then start avoiding. #CommunityGarden #GrowYourOwn #weeding #weeds #allotment #garden
Meanwhile, Kat did a stellar job of weeding out the raspberry arch on the new #allotment plot. We'll get this covered in a thick layer of pine chipping next, and then an extra layer of willow chippings over the path. Considering re-using some of the old mypex for this central path.
Came home with a big bunch of greens... mustard leaf, dill, and some volunteer rocket weeded out of the coriander patch. Left the bean seedlings in the polytunnel as it was too windy to plant them out safely.
So yeah, a bit windy out, made the cycle a bit of a push... but on the plus side it was mainly sunny... colder than it looked, but the sun did the trick for us solar powered antipodean types. There were also more people out on the plots than we've seen in months. Good to see.
As we wound up for the day we were treated to a beaut sunset into the hedge on the opposite side of the site... the warm colours of the sky belying the immediate chill to the air that came with the sinking of the sun.
All hail BST! I wish we had UTC+01:00 all year round to be honest.
Anyway, got some useful stuff done at home and then a late arvo into the evening of #allotment work has happened.
I progressed much further than I expected with the old compost bays at the back of the new plot. I thought I'd just get them emptied, maybe partially deconstructed... but no, they're entirely gone now and I have done the bulk of the earthwork to terrace the rear edge of the plot as well.
The bulk of the material from out of them is now in the greenhouse area. It's a sort of a soil-y dry compost mix with a lot of twig but some definite biomass. I think it'll be a good substrate as part of raising up the ground level inside the greenhouse.
Excellent allotment visit earlier today.
It was pleasant in the sun but a bit breezy.
We had a picnic lunch as usual but we took roast chicken slices, salad and croissants.
I dug out a weed pit after seeing the idea on here. Filled it with a lot of grass clods I'd dug out, and some prunings from various fruit bushes - covered with cardboard and weighted down with bricks.
Planted some more onion sets, parsnip seeds and a few broad bean seeds.
Sacha did a good job weeding the strawberry plants and tying in some of the loganberries.
All in all a very good few hours.
It must be March in New England. We had a high temp yesterday of 79⁰F/26⁰C and today we're at 38⁰F/4⁰C. Par for the course. I noticed that the green bell pepper & tomato seedlings were starting to show some purple mottling on their leaves, which might be a phosphorus deficiency or maybe they're a little chilly, but I gave them a shot of liquid fertilizer this morning, just in case. It won't be too long before they get potted on (weather permitting).

Bean transport ... hopefully they survive a ride, they're a little "leggy" and are going to need some support in the ground I reckon (especially on this windy day!) This is half aquadulce broad beans and half vespa field beans. And it's about time I got a second sowing in.
Pondering seed saving: do I need to worry that field beans and broad beans might cross-polinate?
So that clump of yarrow in its new home will hopefully perk back up after being trapped in a bag overnight, and there's a wet scrape in the making. Whether beneath the gooseberry is the best place for the scrape is perhaps debatable though?
Also been making progress on the new front gate (not shown).

Should my spuds be in? Loads of people at the #allotment have planted their's.
Spent the afternoon at the allotment and I got a fair amount done but it was cold, very blustery and trying very hard to rain. Glad to be home in the warm ready to get acquainted with a glass of wine, a peanut butter curry and this handful of kale flower stems. #allotment #kale
My garden starts all seem to have survived my absence, thanks to my daughter stepping in. Will be time to move things out to the greenhouse in a few days and start potting-up. Spent a while this morning pricking out 8 dozen snapdragon seedlings to pot on. Not my favorite job, but my wife's got to have her snap dragon display. Quite warm today, but more frost coming in a day or two.

"ooo, that's a good idea!"

I am rather pleased I can get this sort of thing to the allotment under my own steam now. And loving how sociable riding a bike can be!
After several weeks work the new alotment polytunnel is finished with planters and pots ready to plant seeds #growyourown #allotment #ukallotment #plants
Job I've been meaning to do for about a week... parsnip seeds spread out on damp paper. Trying this method for the first time.
What other seeds do people try pre-germinating before planting in the ground or modules?
